Walk Details

The walk starts from the Durham Market Square at 10.30 am. Please meet beside the Neptune statue (what3words location code = nation.ranged.item  in the square. There are toilets available in the nearby Indoor Market and also at each of the 3 Park and Ride car parks.

The walk is generally flat and mainly on good paths beside the river, along country lanes and through some woods. The section through the woods is quite muddy so wear good boots and consider the use of sticks as it can be slippy. We do intend to stop for a short picnic break about half way round. The walk is slightly over five miles and finishes back in the market square where there are plenty of pubs and coffee shops nearby.

We would strongly recommend that you use one of the three Park and Ride car parks located at Belmont, Sniperley and Howlands. They all work the same way in that the parking is free and you pay for the bus.

Location of the Park and Ride car parks using what3words location codes.

    • Belmont Park and Ride is on the A690 just of the A1(M) at handfuls.bouncing.lengthen
    • Sniperley Park and Ride is off the A167 at koala.bullion.dolphins
    • Howlands Park and Ride is off the A177 at letter.pile.tribal

The return fare on the bus is £2 per person but if you have a concessionary (pensioners) pass you can use this so it is free. The buses run every fifteen minutes and take approx 15 minutes to reach the city centre so allow for this in your travel plans. We would suggest you ask the driver when you get off where to get the bus back as it may not be obvious.

Alternatively there are city centre car parks, lots of buses and a mainline railway station.
