This is a walk through some of Derbyshire’s finest limestone dales, at a good time of year for spring flowers. The slopes of upper Biggin Dale in particular should show Early Purple Orchids, Cowslips and Meadow Saxifrage… As well as the usual bird life, this is a good location for summer visitors like Redstarts; and in addition, Peregrines nest each year on the crags of Wolfscote Dale.
There is a very steep and sustained climb (Gypsy Bank) near the end of this walk, used to exit Wolfscote Dale and return to Alstonefield, which some walkers may find challenging, and would not be suitable for vertigo sufferers.
Pay car parking in Alstonefield village. There are toilets at the start/end of the walk, and also at the halfway point in Harrington. Packed lunch recommended, but there are refreshments available in Hartington.
Underfoot conditions can be challenging, with tree roots, boulders and slippery limestone to negotiate. Stout waterproof footwear is essential.
