Overview

Frensham Common is a 1,000-acre heathland and was established in the 13th century by the Bishops of Winchester, who also created the Great and Little Ponds around to supply fish to Farnham Castle. It was an area used in the Second World War to train Canadian soldiers at a time when both Frensham Little Pond and the neighbouring Great Pond were drained of water to avoid them being used as markers by the German Luftwaffe. The Devil’s Jumps are a series of three small hills - formed of an ironstone known locally as carstone - near the village of Churt. The highest of the hills is just over 400ft above sea level. Our walk will take in all of these landmarks.
