Join our welcoming and friendly Group for some pleasant, energetic but easy-paced hike and chat in the picturesque hills and countryside above the borderland settlement of Churchstoke (Yr Ystog). On our journey we get acquainted with the steep-sided Camlad valley with its river which meanders its way through this part of the Welsh Marches. The walk will furnish you with a marvellous panorama of views and all the early winter sights and sounds which nature has to offer.
The walk starts with a gradual ascent into the broad panoramic plains at the base of Corndon Hill. From this viewpoint, we can enjoy the breathtaking and spectacular vistas over the Shropshire Hills, the Welsh Marches and the Cambrian Mountain ranges on the horizon.
After skirting the base of Corndon, we then begin the downhill return looping around the lower reaches of Todleth Hill (287m) and Roundton Hill (370m). On this stretch we will be able to look down over the Camlad Valley with its stunning vistas. This area has been declared an official National Nature Reserve due to its unusual volcanic geology, with its exposed rocks and rare flora.
On our outing we will also become acquainted with the plethora of birds and wildlife which resides here and which can be seen preparing itself for the rigours of the winter season.
Whilst we will not ascend to the summit of any of the hills, the walk is energetic and in parts strenuous (I have included an elevation diagram in the photoset above). Aside from the gradual climbs, there is a relatively steep section on Todleth Hill towards the end. That said, we will avail ourselves of lots of opportunities for an easy pace and the catching up of breath.
The majority of the route is by well-established pathway and there are a few small sections along quiet roads.
We are a very gregarious lot and welcome and encourage walkers from outside our Group (if so, please contact via by the email link). As always, we will have an 'elevenses' break as well as a lunch stop, so bring your packed lunches (there are no shopping facilities en route).
Toilet facilities are available in Churchstoke (Yr Ystog) outside the Co-op store at the start / end point (store Sunday opening time 10.00). Sadly, there are no dedicated toilet facilities on the walk. Whilst we will provide ample alternative opportunities, please contact me with any concerns.
Unfortunately, we have a Group policy of no dogs (except for Guide and Assistance dogs)
Any late changes, including potential flood issues or weather-related or similar, will be communicated via the group WhatsApp or via the submitted email.
