From the free car park at Counter’s Gate we head north where we visit the village of Charlton then head onto the West Sussex Literary Trail bordering the lower slopes of Levin Down and on into Charlton Forest. Reaching our highest point we head east on South Downs Way for a short distance where there will be a break for lunch before turning south for the return route via East Dean.
There is very little flat terrain during this walk, perhaps the section along South Downs Way is the most neutral otherwise the route is either going upwards or downwards. There are a couple of short steepish ascents of approx 200m, however the remainder consists of quite long reasonable ascents/descents.
There are some chalk surfaces to be aware of and some areas of mud and puddles if there has been recent rainfall.
Mostly gated access.
A few crossings of country lanes and a short section of roadside walking with no footpath (approx 200m) as the route exits East Dean where walkers should take extra care.
