Walking from the layby, head up a country lane to West Cockplay, then turn right leading to Sharpley Plantation/Sharpley Farm. Walking on towards Teppermoor Hill, turning to Hadrian’s Wall (this past Milecastle is the highest point of the walk). Walking past Walwick and Walwick Hall, back across fields joining the country lane back down past Heatheridge Cottages returning to the layby start point.
Terrain: Inclines – steady and moderate, roads, woodland tracks, well defined tracks, fields and grassy paths. In summary a moderate walk, of approximately 8 miles enjoying lovely open countryside and 360 views across from Milecastle/Trig Point.
There were some cows and calves in field at the early part of the pre-walk, but they were feeding, and we climbed around them with no issues. If not there, then can walk directly on the lower part of the field. Other than sheep, and stiles that were all OK but a little greasy no problems.
Gaiters advisable as heavy mud in places, particularly when crossing fields with livestock.
Will stop for lunch at rocky outcrop once walking along from Milecastle, sheltered if cooler weather, along with hydration stops.
The Crown Inn, Humshaugh will be open for refreshments/tea/coffee – or The Riverside Café, Chollerford (closes 4pm).
