A pleasant afternoon walk which takes in Knebworth Park and quiet woodlands and farmland beyond. Using public rights of way, the route crosses the deer park within the grounds of Knebworth House and later in the walk it gives close up views of the House itself and the charming 12th-century church of St Mary and St Thomas.
Hills are gentle and underfoot the terrain is good. We will take a short break for water (and snacks if you wish to bring them). Walking is predominantly on footpaths and bridleways. There are a couple of faster road crossings but in the main the lanes we walk along are quiet.
The route begins by leaving Knebworth Village Hall to walk uphill by the main road; we will soon be walking along a quiet lane by Park Wood and crossing a field, then shortly after we will cross a road and find ourselves in the deer park.
After passing the Lytton memorial, the route continues through small woods and farmland on good paths and country lanes, taking in Graffidge Wood, Burleigh Farm (where we might see some sheep) and Wintergreen Wood. We then come back into Knebworth Park, with views of the lake and a walk up the impressive avenue with a view of the House. Finally after passing by the church we return through Old Knebworth.
After our walk we can join other walkers for cream teas at Knebworth Village Hall.
