Join us to walk off those winter cobwebs with a jolly wander around the hills and valleys of Hertfordshire. We begin - ironically - in Bedfordshire, but it’s not long before we cross into the aforementioned county.
We cross through the picturesque Studham Common before walking down and up a valley and reaching the edge of the Ashridge Estate. We then pass through the beautiful but little-visited Hudnall Common, enjoying stunning countryside views, before heading back down a hill.
We go downhill further along a footpath, passing under a magnificent loan oak tree in the middle of farmer’s field. Then we walk up and down a hill before arriving in Great Gaddesden and crossing the idyllic River Gade.
We go back uphill, through Jockey End, before passing the impressive Beechwood Park School. Prior to its current usage, the manor dates back as early as 1086, when it was recorded in the Domesday Book. The Manor House was used frequently by King Henry VIII and later by Edward VI, and to this day, stands out as a beacon of local prosperity.
From here we head back through woodland and along countryside paths to return to our start point in Studham.
Please bring packed lunch and wear a good pair of walking boots. We will stop for up to 30 minutes to eat lunch in a scenic spot, but not for any longer due to the short daylight hours of winter.
Please arrive 10-15 minutes early, because the car park is small. If full, you will need extra time to park safely on a nearby street - e.g. Kensworth Road - and walk up to meet us.
