Leaving the village centre, we cross the River Kent at Barley Bridge and climb gradually following Hall Lane until we reach Park House. At this point the lane becomes a bridleway and we head north east along it, ascending on an easy gradient until we reach a wall. Skeggles Water appears to our east nestled in the foothills of Green Quarter Fell. From the wall we make a steeper ascent over pathless grassy terrain aiming for the summit of Hollow Moor at 426m. It is no more than a grassy mound with a few stones, but it provides excellent views into the upper Kentmere valley.
The top is one of ‘Wainwright’s outlying fells’ and is the high point of the day. If the weather is playing ball we will stop here for lunch, otherwise we will wait to have lunch on lower more sheltered ground. The descent from the summit is again pathless and involves climbing a wall. Its a steep short descent until we reach a path at a sheepfold which leads us to Green Quarter hamlet and Kentmere village. Kentmere village is a lovely secluded village with traditional stone buildings and includes a church and Kentmere Hall. We follow the path to Kentmere Hall and then head southwards alongside Kentmere Tarn, and the River Kent until we reach Browfoot Lane. Staveley village is reached via quiet roadside walking along Browfoot Lane.
Alternative option: Should the weather be unkind, the alternative route choice is to skip Hollow Moor and Green Quarter Fell, and instead north of Park House, take a path that stays on lower ground to Kentmere village. The return leg of the route will be the same as that described above. This will reduce the climb and height gained, and result in a shorter walk.
Attending: Please register your intent to join the walk using the booking form, found in the Summit Good website link, before 5pm Friday.
