This is a fun, social, but moderate hike up the tallest mountain in England via one of its most popular direct up and down route with members from all the Rambling groups in the area invited. Also, a long-time member of Summit Good is going to Everest Base Camp in Nepal to raise money for Cancer Research and Diabetes UK and will be available to Lunch Sherpa sandwiches to the top for a small donation to the charities (no obligation). A pre-summer hiking season social will be held in Wasdale Head Inn from about 1600. All are welcome :)
We’ll meet in Wasdale Lake Head Car Park between 09:00-09:30 at the National Trust Information Board just before the start of the main path up to Scafell Pike. This is the time to take the opportunity to hire our Lunch Sherpa for charity
At 09:30 we begin our ascent by hiking East along Lingmell Gill which will be our bubbling companion for the first half of the hike. The path is relatively smooth, straight and not rocky. We pass through a copse of trees and eventually cross Lingmell Gill where the path incline begins to rise. The path is mixture of soil and rocks of varying size with the odd step. The beautiful green hills of Lingmell and Green How rise to either side.
After approximately 1 mile / 1.5km we cross a boulder strewn Lingmell Gill again and begin ascending more steeply up Brown Tongue. The path here becomes a mixture of steps and rocky soil. Eventually, after approximately another 0.6 mile / 1 kilometre of moderately steep ascent we come to the flat boulder field called Hollow Stones which has wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and Wast Water. Here we will take a short break and then continue on across Hollow Stones towards Lingmell Coll.
The path then becomes rocky and steep again as we ascend towards the Coll. Before reaching summit of Lingmell Coll we curve around Pikes Crag following the cairn marked, stone path which eventually takes us across rocky ground to the summit of Scafell Pike at 978m. At the top we will have lunch and then head back down following the same path we ascended until we reach Lingmell Coll.
Here instead of returning down towards Hollow Stones we continue North towards Lingmell and the path that follows Lingmell’s grassy slopes steeply down past Goat Crags all the way down to the first crossing of Lingmell Gill where we will return to the main path and Car Park by approximately 1530. We will then convene at Wasdale Head Inn at approximately 1600 for a social.
Please bring a packed lunch and donations for the lunch Sherpa! All funds raised with go equally to Cancer Research and Diabetes UK. For those interested in donating, Jude has set up a donations page:
