Overview

Ho Ho Horsforth

From Fink Hill car park in Horsforth, via pavements, down to Newlay Bridge.  After crossing the river we join the canal and follow this to Rodley.  We leave the canal, cross the river via Calverley packhorse bridge, then follow the riverside path towards Rawdon.

We head up through woodland, across fields, and up a walled lane.  When we did this walk on 29/12/24 there were (Bah) Humbugs, otherwise known as Belted Galloways, in the field next to the walled lane.  We cross the main road, then continue up Well Lane to Billing View.  We head up through woodland, where we will stop for lunch, with a view of Larkfield dam.  It can be cold here, particularly if it is a windy day, so please bring an extra layer of clothing to keep warm.  After lunch we go to Rawdon Billing trig point.

There is a narrow footpath beside the perimeter fence at Leeds Bradford Airport, it is approx one mile.  When we did this walk on 29/12/24 much of the path was alright, some of it was muddy, and some of it was very wet.  Good balance and stability will be required on this section of the walk if the conditions underfoot are similar to last year, and walking poles if you have them.

The return to the edge of Horsforth is via fields and footpaths, some of which may be muddy.

We walk along Town Street back to the car park.  Last year there were Christmas street lights, and some shops had Christmas decorations in their shop windows.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The train station is approx one mile from the car park.  Please allow enough time to walk to the car park.

There are three bus stops close to the car park (see photo).  Please check to see which services operate on a Sunday.

https://bustimes.org/stops/450013191 Horsforth The Green

https://bustimes.org/services/50-horsforth-the-green-seacroft-bus-station  There is a bus stop on Leeds Headrow.

https://bustimes.org/services/34-leeds-bus-station-otley-bus-station-2  There is a bus from Leeds bus station.  This stops on New Road Side, which is about a ten minute walk from the car park.  Or you could get off the bus on New Road Side near Rose Terrace and wait by the pedestrian crossing / Horsforth Brewery, as we will be passing that way as we walk to Newlay Bridge.

Please arrive on time as we will not be waiting.  Although I carry working torches, the aim is to arrive back in Horsforth by dusk.

AFTER THE WALK

Possibility of drinks and food.  I will not be booking anywhere, a decision will be made at the end of the walk about whether to go for food and where to go.  I have not been to any of these places.
