Overview

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

Join us on a circular route around Knebworth Park to celebrate International Women's Day. This walk will take us through the Knebworth Estate, home of Constance Lytton (1869 - 1923), the influential suffragette activist, writer, speaker and campaigner for prison reform, votes for women, and birth control.

The route is mainly through parkland, farmland and woodland, with some town walking at the start and end. There are some gentle slopes and paths which may be muddy and slippery in parts, so please wear appropriate clothing including walking boots.

The route will start outside the Stevenage Interchange. From there we will cross the industrial estate to reach Norton Green, venture into North Wood, cross Burleigh Farm then enter the Knebworth Estate. The estate hosts an important herd of deer and with a little luck we will spot some so keep your eyes peeled. We'll walk on the eastern edge of the estate and past the Cenotaph, where we will have our first view of Knebworth House. The Cenotaph was erected in memory of Elizabeth Bulwer Lytton who died in 1842 and had Knebworth House redesigned in a Tudor Gothic style.

Leaving Knebworth Park, we will head along the road toward The Lytton Arms pub to have our packed lunches on the green opposite; those who want to will also be able to visit the pub for a quick drink (please do not eat your own food on their property).

After lunch we head towards Park Wood and through Old Knebworth then return to Knebworth Park to get a better and closer view of the house. We'll then enter Newton Wood and walk around its eastern edge to regain Norton Green and the meeting point.

Please bring a packed lunch and drinks as we will not be passing any shops.

Please note this walk is not suitable for dogs, as we will be walking through the deer park.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

Please:

  • DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.

  • UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.

  • DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.

  • *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*

  • DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.

  • BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.

  • FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
