Overview

This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.

A short walk across a mixture of farmland and woodland, with some steep hills. It starts and ends at Welwyn North station, includes a lunch stop at Danesbury Park, and includes an hour’s long trip round Welwyn Roman Baths (which will cost £6 payable on entry) before we return to Welwyn North under the viaduct. If you have ever driven onto the A1(M) southbound at junction 6 from Welwyn, the chances are you will have passed the brown sign for the Welwyn Roman Baths. Maybe, you have often thought: “that looks interesting, I must go one day.” Well this walk is "the day."

We will first walk uphill through the housing to the path across to Locksleys. This is a long path, going straight up and down across a field, which you can see from the train window in the gap between the two tunnels between Knebworth and Welwyn North.

The path then goes under the A1 road bridge and through an underpass before we cross the Welwyn bypass and walk up into Danesbury estate, where we will have a lunch stop at the Victorian fernery. After lunch we will walk back down into Welwyn village, with its large church and many pubs, before carefully crossing the busy slip roads to the motorway junction to get to the Roman Baths.

After visiting the baths, we go back to Welwyn North station by walking round the back of Monks Walk school, past some classic Welwyn Garden City houses and under the viaduct on the pedestrian road you can see from a train. There will be an optional drink at the Cowper Arms next to the station.

Please note this walk is not suitable for dogs.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
