Overview

Head north on A696 (Jedburgh road); Kirkharle is 6½ miles north of Belsay.  Turn left onto B6342. Kirkharle is 700yds on your right down the slope.

Please park at the back of the courtyard, signposted "East Car Park".  Parking is free.

This walk is a fairly level leisurely 5 mile walk with one gradual climb. Starting at Kirkharle Courtyard (birthplace of Capability Brown with 14th century church) we walk on mainly tracks but there is one section across a field. There are no stiles.  There is no special place to stop for lunch but we will stop for a short while mid walk.

We follow a tree-lined permissive path through the Kirkharle Estate gradually climbing to a point overlooking Kirkwhelpington and then a gradual climb up a road, turning back across open countryside and then rejoining the tree-lined avenue back to Kirkharle.

The track was very muddy at the end of March therefore sticks and gaiters are highly recommended.

At Kirkharle Courtyard  there are toilets, gift shops, art shops and a lovely cafe. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and time can be spent eating and browsing!
