A fairly challenging, hilly and fast paced walk that begins in the rolling hills in the southernmost part of the Borough of Bromley, then entering Kent and briefly passing along the North Downs ridge (including Betsoms Hill - the highest point in Kent) and then descending into the pleasant town of Westerham. Afterwards the walk then passes predominantly along the Greensand Ridge, then through Whitley Forest and finishing in Sevenoaks town centre.
Total ascent and descent both 900 metres and there are some great views from from both ridges.
Bring a packed lunch. Lunch break will be on the green at Westerham, there are however plenty of pubs and cafes, so there can be a generous break for lunch to allow people to go to these for drinks and light bites.
There can also be mini breaks at quarter distance (Cudham) and three quarters distance (Ide Hill) where there are public toilets (which should hopefully be open). Plenty of pubs at the end, which one we go to will depend on numbers.
Terrain: field paths, tracks, downs, woodland
Travel: Take 9:40 from Charing Cross (9:44 Waterloo East, 9:50 London Bridge), arr. 10:31 Knockholt.
The start point (despite being in the middle of nowhere - Knockholt village itself is several miles away) is actually in a London travel zone. So, for anyone travelling from within a travel zone, the cheapest option is to tap in / out in the morning and purchase a single from Sevenoaks on the journey home. For anyone starting from outside a travel zone, purchase a return to Sevenoaks.
There is only one exit from the station platform (the station has no facilities on a Saturday), meet next to the platform exit in the station car park. There also may not be any toilets on the train - depending on which type of train Southeastern decide to use!
