This is a circular walk of approx. 12.7 miles around the Vale of the White Horse linking some pleasant villages, following the course of the old Wilts and Berks Canal and part of the Ridgeway Path. From the village hall in Letcombe Regis we head north through Childrey, crossing the old canal, to West Challow. Here we turn west towards Sparsholt where we stop for coffee. We continue west towards Kingston Lisle and Fawler before turning south to head up onto the Ridgeway for a lunch stop with, weather permitting, fabulous views to the north. We turn east along the Ridgeway passing the Devils Punchbowl and Crowhole Bottom before dropping down into Letcombe Bassett. We then follow the course of the river on an elevated path back to the start.
The going underfoot should be generally good on well maintained paths and tracks. There is a potentially muddy woodland section when following the course of the canal plus at this time of the year we are likely to encounter some paths with prolific “vegetation” growth. The are a number of gates, a couple of stiles and approx. 340m of ascent most of which is the path up to the Ridgeway.
Please bring sufficient food and drink for the day to include a coffee and lunch stop
