Stour Valley Walk. Upstreet to Canterbury.
The walk begins at Grove Ferry Hill Bus Stop, (remember bus passes) Upstreet, half an hour from Canterbury bus station. Controlled Railway Crossing to walk along the banks of Great Stour River for 3.5 miles along the Lampen Wall through fields with cows and horses to Stodmarsh through the Nature Reserve. The Nature reserve covers an area of internationally-important reed beds, fens, ditches, wet grassland and open water, which provide an ideal habitat for breeding and wintering birds, invertebrates and rare plants. There are possibilities of wild beaver in the area, reported and filmed on local news! Will be wet and muddy after rain. Waterproof boots essential and gaiters @ poles recommended. We will stop at the small village of Stodmarsh at the Red Lion or a wander around the village and St Mary’s Church. There are two stiles en-route.
Bring sandwiches/snacks.
There are further river paths from Stodmarsh and through woodland with minor road walking to Fordwich (3 miles), notable as the smallest town in Britain. We will stop at Fordwich at the George and Dragon or a wander around the town and another Church called St. Mary’s.
The walk from Fordwich to Canterbury is 3 miles where we take the bus from Canterbury bus station to the University. We cross the Canterbury Golf Course en-route.
