The trail starts from the village of Llanfrynach (public toilets - donation requested) and follows the country roads across the fields, heading along the edge of Coed Tyle-du to make the ascent up the northern moorland slope to Bwlch y Ddwyallt. As you make your way along, enjoy the magnificent vistas of Pen y Fan and the surrounding peaks, as well as sweeping views down into the valley below. From here, continue along the northern edge of the escarpment to Craig Cwareli, Craig Cwm-Oergwm, and finally Fan y Big. This summit offers unparalleled views of the rest of the horseshoe ridge. Descend the northern ridge of Fan y Big. This route is one of the more challenging descents from the mountain, involving a steep rocky descent down to the ridge line via Cefn Cyff then following the paths across the fields back to the village.
While the trail is dog-friendly, it’s recommended to keep dogs on leads for their safety, as these are ridge walks, and you’re likely to encounter free-roaming sheep.

This energetic walk can be phenomenal in good weather and not when the weather is bad or the flying ants are hatching (we've experienced both extremes and everything in between). The route is planned for best views but may reverse if the weather requires. This is a high ridge walk with no 'get-out' points to cut it short once we are on the ridge so please plan accordingly.
Bring waterproofs, plenty of food/snacks and fluids and your personal first aid kit in a suitable backpack and wearing good hiking boots.
The trail is accessible year-round, with the months between late spring to early autumn being considered the best time to visit. Be aware that these mountains and ridges can be very exposed and weather conditions can change rapidly, so make sure to layer clothing appropriately, as it gets chilly and windy at the top.
