Overview

Coach starts at Prestwich at 08.20, picks up in Sedgeley Park 08.25, then Chorlton St at 08.50, Stretford 09.10, Sale 09.20, Altrincham 09.30.  (NB: Timings  for pick-up points are approximate - please be at the pick-up point in good time)

Three walks:

Long Walk (Strenuous) - 12.5 miles 1800ft ascent Leader: Mary H

Linear from Ponderosa on the A542. Walk to first wireless station (565m/ 1854ft) on Cyrn-y-Brain, strike across country towards the head of Nant Craig y Moch and towards Craig y Moch to climb up Eglwyseg Mountain (511m/1677ft).  Next towards Craig yr Adar and walk below the escarpment, picking up Offa's Dyke Path.  Minor road near Bryn Goleu and follow it round until we reach a point just after Tan-y-castell and make our final ascent of the day up to Castell Dinas Bran(320m/ 1050ft).  From there we will drop down into Llangollen.

This is a strenuous walk over some boggy terrain and some narrow paths with steep drops on one side. If the weather is very misty we will not go up Eglwyseg Mountain.  It is possible we may not be back much before the bus departure as the walking duration is 6 hours without stops.

Medium Walk (Moderate/Easy) - 8 miles 789ft ascent  Leader: Ian

Linear from Hen-bandy, off the A542. Hendre, Bryn-hyfryd, Dinbren, Offa’s Dyke Path, Trevor Uchaf, Ty-canol then Tow Path into Llangollen.

Medium walk alternative (Moderate) - 9.5 miles 1500ft ascent

There will be an option to take an alternative and longer route at Dinbren. Mary EC will lead a walk to incorporate Castell Dinas Bran (1050ft). The route will be Hen-bandy, Hendre, Bryn-hyfryd, Dinbren Hall, a steep but short ascent and descent of Castell Dinas Bran, Offa’s Dyke path, Panorama Walk, Trevor Uchaf, Bron Heulog, Llandyn Hall, Wern-Uchaf, Geufron, Llangollen.

Short Walk (Easy) - 6 miles Leader: Steve W

Linear from Valle Crucis Abbey on A542 (free toilets). Very slight ascent of 66ft on track before you join the canal. The walk is mainly tracks and paths between the canal and the river Dee, to Trevor Uchaf, passing through Wenffrwd Nature Reserve. Finally cross the bridge to come into Llangollen.

Coach will leave Llangollen at 5.30 p.m.
