The walk starts from Llanhilleth Miners' Institute and uses quiet fields and paths to reach the remains of Crumlin Navigation Colliery. We then ascend to Pen-y-fan Pond using footpaths and quiet lanes (taken at a gentle pace). We will then make our way to the summit of Mynydd Pen-y-fan, before descending through Graig Fawr and past Aberbeeg Hospital before returning to Llanhilleth.
There should be good views throughout the walk if the weather is kind.
There is only one stile. The descent through Graig Fawr uses a fairly narrow, stony path but is not steep. There are often cattle on Mynydd Pen-y-fan but they seem placid.
Pen-y-fan Pond is very exposed to the elements and there is often a cold wind. The toilets will not be open as they are only open from April until September.
Dogs are very welcome. Please note that there is a warning of toxic blue-green algae at Pen-y-fan Pond.
