This is a spectacular walk on a fine day. We start off heading westerly, crossing the river Tawe and up over open moorland to Llyn y Fan Fawr. Taking the steep path behind the lake up onto Fan Brycheiniog, we then follow the ridge line mostly, apart from a contour around Picws Du. At Waun Lefrith we begin our descent, curling around Llyn y Fan Fach as we gradually drop to the level of the reservoir. From there we wind our way along the foothills back to the opposite side of Llyn y Fan Fawr for possibly a paddle if it’s very hot. From there it’s another yomp over open moorland back to the cars.
Most of the climbing is in the first half of the walk, with the climb up to Fan Brycheiniog being the toughest section. Each can take it at the pace they are comfortable with. Parts of the walk are on rough open moorland where there may be boggy areas depending on rainfall. There is one very short section of path where the path is narrow by a steepish drop.
