We have not walked in this area for a number of years due to the lack of coach parking. However, as it such a great area for walking it is time for a return visit. Loggerheads Country Park with its Visitor Centre and cafe, and with a pub just across the road, it makes this one of the best locations that we go to. Walks may well take you up to the Jubilee Tower on Moel Fanau and Offa's Dyke Path. Or along the valley towards Cilcain. This is sure to be a popular destination once again with coach seats selling fast.
There will be three walks available, from easy to strenuous depending on the walk selected. with full details circulated on the coach.
A Walk Leader - Dave White - Map on our Southport Ramblers Facebook page soon.
B Walk Leader - Dave Scowcroft - We walk through Loggerheads Country Park along the river to Bryn y Castell, then climb westwards around the north side of Ffrith Mountain. Maintaining our heading westwards, we steadily climb, turning south to the top of Moel Famau. There we will see the Jubilee Tower and (hopefully) 360 degree views across Wales, Cheshire and Lancashire. The top will no doubt be busy, as it is a popular destination, but we will then descend a well-made and well-walked path through the Clwyd Forest to the main visitor car park. From there, we cross the main road, loop around to the south via a river and woodland, and return to the country park. The route is short for a B walk at about 8 miles / 13km, with just a few stiles, but it includes 490m / 1600 ft of ascent.
C Walk Leader - Dave Eccles - 6.5 to 7 miles with a total ascent of 800ft. Starting from the top of the road leading down to Loggerheads and head for the quarry before reaching the village of Pantymwyn, and around a golf course. Then on a footpath into Loggerheads Country Park with views of the River Alyn, Devils Gorge, limestone cliffs and several caves.
