Just south of Kendal Oxenholme is well known for its railway station on the West Coast Main Line. Not so well known is The Helm, a grassy ridge running south offering superb views of this quiet part of Cumbria. We hope to park by the Station Inn, which we welcome on our return.
Three Walks will be available, with details circulated on the coach. They will range from easy to strenuous depending on the walk selected.
"A" Walk Leader - Dave White - Starts at Oxenholme station, a circular route anti-clockwise, approximately 10 miles with 1200ft of ascent, none steep and largely over level ground.
"B" Walk Leader - Dave Eccles - 9 to 9.5 miles with a total ascent of 665ft and a high point of 520ft. Walking along the Helm towards Natland, then South towards Sedgwick using part of the disused Lancaster Canal before turning to our right to pick up the River Kent (we have a short distance where the path is narrow and around 20ft above the river) in the direction of the outskirts of Kendal. From here we head South back into Natland, then bank to Oxenholm via a different route.
"C" Walk Leader - John Slatcher - 7 to 7.5 miles and mostly flat. We head North along a lane before taking a path up to Windy Farm, another lane takes us to a house which just after we cross a stile before making our way into Kendal. Passing the castle we join the old canal going South to Crowpark Bridge. We now walk into Natland village before heading back to Oxenholme.
