To celebrate this auspicious occasion Portsmouth Ramblers are organising a walk, chosen by Marion, from Guildford around the area where Marion was born and spent her early years. All members and friends of Portsmouth Ramblers are welcome to join us.
As the longer walk at 12.9 miles is slightly longer than our usual Saturday walk, a shorter version at 6.4 miles, joining half way, has been developed so that everyone can walk with Marion back into Guildford.
Whilst driving to Guildford is an option which some may wish to consider, parking in central Guildford on a Saturday can sometimes be difficult. In recognition of this we have timed the walk around train times from Portsmouth.
Long Walk – 12.9 miles and c.1450 ft of ascent/descent. Walking from Guildford Station we head south picking up the Pilgrims Way at the Chanteries, heading along this and the North Downs Way to St Martha’s Church and Newlands Corner. From here we descend from the Downs towards the Silent Pool, where the shorter walk will commence. From Silent Pond we make our way to Albury and thence back towards Guildford crisscrossing the Tilling Bourne passing Albury Mill before taking in the old Chilworth gunpowder works, before returning to the Chanteries ready for our return into Guildford via the Castle. Walk will stop for a coffee break, with lunch at Silent Pool. There will be an additional stop on the return leg
Getting there - The 8.37 stopping train from Portsmouth arrives at Guildford Station at 9.59 when the walk will commence.
