Join me for a Ramble across the southern section of Bodmin Moor and Caradon Mining District (part of Cornish Mining World Heritage Site) to celebrate my retirement.
Starting at Cornwall's highest village of Minions we will traverse The Hurlers stone circles and explore Rillaton Barrow and Gumb's Cave as we climb Stowe Pound to the fortified settlement and past the Cheesewring.
Next we cross the open moor to Kilmar Tor and have a possible meeting with a rock monster before passing through Bearah Quarry to lower levels. Walking on quiet lanes and woodland to Phoenix Mine and taking the old train track we return to Minions.
At this point there is an option for those wanting a shorter walk (a little over 6 miles) to return to the car. For those still with strength in their legs we follow the old rail-bed down Gonamena Incline into the spectacular Caradon Mining Valley and circle around Caradon Hill back to the cars.
Bring drinks and a packed lunch and wear stout walking boots. The weather on the moors can change quickly so pack clothing accordingly: bring Arctic gear and sun-cream!
Toilets in Minions Village for those in need.
Any dogs will need to stay on the lead due to sheep grazing on the open moor.
Possible pub visit at the old mine count house, The Crows Nest Inn.
