Join us for a leisurely early evening walk from Laddingford through farmland and country lanes towards Yalding. At Twyford Marina we'll cross the new low-carbon footbridge before following the Medway Valley Walk back to Laddingford.
It's a flat walk but be prepared for six challenging stiles. Small dogs on short leads are welcome (owners will need to lift dogs over stiles).
Non-members are invited to join this walk as one of their three free 'taster' Ramblers walks. Please contact the walk leader if you haven't walked with us before.
After the walk, everyone is welcome at The Chequers Inn, where Hartley Morris and Kits Coty Morris will be performing from 20.00. Thursday is 'sausage night' with a variety of local sausages on the menu, plus regular menu options. If you wish to eat, please call 01622 871266 to book, and ask to be seated with Tonbridge and Malling Ramblers.
Ramblers who were frustrated by the 17-week closure of the Medway Valley Walk at Twyford Marina in summer 2024 will find a smart new, low-carbon footbridge in 2025!
The Environment Agency said that fishing nets were recycled into fibre-reinforced polymer, which was used to build the body and deck of the 16-metre bridge. The bridge deck was built in the Netherlands and shipped to Nottinghamshire, where handrails were added, before it was hauled by road to Yalding. The last part of its journey was by barge along the River Medway, before it was lifted into position by crane.
The Environment Agency say that the new bridge is both light and strong, and this enabled the size of the supporting foundations to be reduced, thus further lowering the carbon footprint and reducing future maintenance.
