Overview

After crossing Ovingham Bridge, we walk on open footpaths, before descending to the footbridge to cross Whittle Burn. Climbing up the east bank, we then cross open fields to Gallowhill Lane and then to Horsley. Heading towards Wylam, we double back on ourselves, through Horsley Wood to Hagg Bank Bridge. We then take a “scenic” route back to the car park, minimising any tarmac walking.

Terrain: A few stiles. Footpaths around and across fields with muddy areas and standing water in a few places - especially around stiles and gateways, but much drier than expected on the pre-walk in early February. Some steep steps and some steep muddy climbs. Fields near Horsley may contain cows, depending on whether they are released from their winter quarters.

Refreshments: Coffee and lunch stops en route. Cafe at car park at end of walk.
