Moderately paced 12.5 mile, undulating, circular walk (drop-out at 6 miles for bus to Eastbourne).
The route: Most of this walk follows the 1066 Country Walk and other paths crossing the South Downs, with extensive views over Eastbourne, the coast and downland scenery. As a result, the route is undulating in places and also involves the most gradual ascent I can find up onto the downs and the summit of Cold Crouch hill, and a descent to leave them on the return leg. The effort of climbing is rewarded by 360 degree views, and we will certainly have a rest stop at the top to enjoy them.
Lunch: at East Dean after 6 miles where there is a pub, a tearoom and a pretty village green with a couple of benches. Please bring food with you, as there may not be time for a pub lunch. East Dean is also a drop-out point for bus to Eastbourne.
Meet at Polegate station (Platform 1 across the bridge - not by the main entrance on arrival platform) - at 11:11.
Travel: Victoria 09:46/Clapham Junction 09:53/East Croydon 10:03 ‐ Southern Ore service - arr Polegate 11:11.
Please use toilets on the train - the downs are exposed with limited tree cover.
