Route: Most of this walk follows the 1066 Country Walk and other paths crossing the South Downs, with
extensive views over Eastbourne, the coast and downland scenery. As a result, the route is undulating in places and involves the most gradual ascent I can find up onto the Downs and the summit of Cold Crouch, and a descent to leave them on the return leg. The effort of climbing is rewarded by 360 degree views, and we will certainly have a rest stop at the top to enjoy them.
Lunch will be at East Dean after 6 miles, where there is a pub, a tearoom and a pretty village green with a couple of benches. Please bring food with you, as there may not be time for a pub lunch.
East Dean is also a drop-out point by bus to Eastbourne.
Travel: Victoria at 09:46 (Ore service), calling at Clapham Junction at 09:53 and East Croydon at 10:03 and arriving at Polegate at 11:11. Please use the toilets on the train, the Downs are exposed with limited tree cover.
