A very pleasant walk in the rolling South Yorkshire countryside heads immediately north east in the general direction of Cawthorne along the bridleway of the 1809 Silkstone Wagon Way, via Silkstone Beck, Furnace Bridge and lastly Barnby Furnace, with its rich history of local coal mining and iron works owned by the Spencer family of Cannon Hall. Our route follows the original horse drawn railway track which carried coal from Silkstone to the Furnace. Eventually we emerge at Cinder Hill Bridge after passing Barnby Hall, before eventually winding our way through the quaint streets of Cawthorne where a small village green and bench give us a convenient stop for refreshment. Crossing the A635 to join the trail to Banks Hall, we continue south east over fields to cross the pretty footbridge at Banks Bottom Dike for our return to Pot House Hamlet, where refreshment and sustenance are available in the Potting Shed Cafe on site.
There is the possibility of cattle in one field, so all dogs should be on a close lead please.
