Walk Description: Note slightly earlier start time. We will be on a variety of Dorset’s fields and tracks for this fairly demanding walk (just about Moderate) as we start low, with much of the next seven miles an ascent to varying degrees. Starting not far from the coast north-west of Abbotsbury we climb inland, as the walk has over 615 metre (2,000 feet) elevation. We leave the village of Puncknowle (‘Punnell’) stopping briefly at The Knoll (a 19thC look-out and signal station with sea views) before heading north toward Litton Cheney, onward and upward through West Compton to the 200 metres of iron-age Eggardon Hill for a lunch stop and (hopefully) lovely views south. Returning on the downward leg (albeit with ups and downs) through Askerswell and across the A35 we return to our start point for welcome refreshments.
Meet Point (Description):
Church Street, Puncknowle, outside the Crown Inn
Please park where available along Church Street as close to The Crown as feasible. Car share where possible as it’s street parking only and to lighten our carbon footprint!
