Initially involving some safe road walking, we eventually alight onto the Chesterfield Canal towpath, which, apart from the town itself, takes up the majority of the walk. Retford is a picturesque, well maintained town, and will be reached in an hour after the start. Toilet facilities are immediately available in Kings Park gardens, from which a walk of a few hundred yards will take us into the Market Square, where the ceremony will already have started. However, we will be there in good time for the main event.
Once the ceremony has concluded, we will leave the square as a group, and walk the short distance into Carolgate, where we will take lunch. There are benches provided for those of us who have taken a packed lunch, and cafes for those who haven’t. Adequate time, 40 minutes, will ensure that the latter have been served, and we will all then muster in Carolgate, walk back onto the canal path, and head for home. It is anticipated that the walk will conclude around 1.30 pm.
The wearing of poppies is discretionary, and we are hoping that, as in the past, a good number of our members will attend, despite of the distance involved, and turn up on the day. After all, those lads that gave their all on our behalf turned up, so it’s the least we can do for them. Well behaved dogs are always welcome, but must be kept on leads throughout, please.
