We are walking the Coastal Path round the island in sections - anticlockwise this time.
This is the sixth of our coastal path stages. It is a linear walk.,
It has taken me a while to get my head round the logistics of this circumnavigation, and I have been debating whether to divide this latter section, from Chale back to our original start point of Ryde, into two sections or three. In the end I have gone with the latter, to give us a more relaxed walk, time to stop and enjoy the views, eating and drinking, maybe a swim at the end or whatever, and hopefully this will encourage members to join us for a lovely day out. It is a great section of the round the island walk.
(With any length section it is obviously up to you if you choose to “exit” the section earlier and arrange your transport accordingly - just please let me know before you disappear!)
This section starts at the bus stop outside Chale Old Church at 10.20am. The no 6 bus from Newport is the 09.50 which arrives at Chale Church at 10.18 , and the 10.20am walk start time is designed to tie in with that).
From Chale we head via Blackgang, Niton, and St Lawrence through to Ventnor. This is a lovely stretch of the coastal path, steep in places, with some great views.
This section of the walk ends at Ventnor paddling pool , where we will start next time.
Toilets (free) and food and drink outlets at Ventnor only.
Travel
Quick little disclaimer please - I'll do my best to try and assist as regards time estimates, checking timetables, and suggestions re possible travel logistics, however, as with all walks, your own travel arrangements are your responsibility, so please do check details and how they might meet your individual needs.
Two cars
I try and promote using the bus, and it is perfectly do-able from Newport for this section. However alternatively you may prefer to consider a car share/shuffle. Any offers or requests can be posted on the Whatsapp group, if you are on that. If you wish to do this, park the first car at Ventnor (or your end point, if shorter) and take the second car back to Chale (car park or on-street parking on the village) for collection later).
By bus – from Newport
The first No 6 bus of the day from Newport is the 09.50 which arrives at Chale Church at 10.18 , and the 10.20am walk start time is designed to tie in with that.
There are half hourly No 3 buses back from Ventnor Boots at (until evening) 7 and 37 mins past the hour.
(In case you are wondering, unfortunately the No 6 doesn't run early enough in the opposite direction to enable parking at the end and bussing back to the start - the first bus of the day isn't until 11.00 from Ventnor / 11.36 at Chale, which is too late to be practical).
Car share
In the interests of the air, parking, and non-drivers, if anyone is able to offer, or needs, a car share in respect of all or part of the travel for this walk, please post on WhatsApp group (to join group please message Serena 07564-811690).
DATES FOR THE FUTURE SECTIONS OF THE REVERSE ISLAND WALK :
~ Sun 27 July
~ Sun 17 Aug
~ Sun 7 Sept
~ Sun 28 Sept
NB : If today's walk has to be postponed for any reason, it will simply take place on the date listed for the next section, and so forth. So basically all the sections will just fall back a date, no "fresh" dates creeping in for any postponements, any change will just default to the next date (and if need be then extra date(s) can be added at the end). Hopefully this may make it easier for the diaries of walkers - and leader!
Drinks and a packed lunch or snack. (In particular please bring plenty of drink, especially if the weather is hot).
Swimming stuff if you are considering a possible swim at the end of the walk.
Depending on the weather, consider suitable clothing, footwear, walking pole(s), sun cream, drinks, and food. Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker
Please note there are short sections of road walking – please walk in single file and take good care.
Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation /postponement notices. You can also check with Serena on 07564-811690.
New walkers welcome
If you are new to the Ramblers you can just turn up for any of our walks, unless we specify otherwise. We invite you to come along for three walks as a non-member.
Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about
- Any health concerns that you have
- Any emergency contact information
We'd ask you to make sure that we have ready access to this, if needed.
Some people may wish to carry an ICE (in case of emergency) card. We have Ramblers cards for this purpose. Do discuss this subject with your walk leader if it is of interest.
Whatsapp
If you would like to join the informal WhatsApp group (or even just temporarily for the purposes of communications regarding this specific walk and then exit again) , please message Serena on 07564-811690 to be added.
