The third in a series of "Really Get To Know" a smaller than usual area of interest with a maze of footpaths which nonetheless offer a varied walking experience. Bring a packed lunch.
This walk concentrates on Pulpit Hill and the Grangelands and Rifle Range BBOWT Nature Reserve, near Chequers, to cover some of the area in-between the earlier two walks in the series at Whiteleaf Hill and Coombe Hill. It also includes pleasant routes from Princes Risborough and through Whiteleaf.
We will commence from Princes Risborough, up to Whiteleaf Village and then up to Whiteleaf Hill. Down into the pretty open valley called "The Hangings" between Giles Wood and Ninn Wood, past The Plough at Cadsden where we could have the option for a break. Into the Grangelands and Rifle Range Nature Reserve, skirting around the Eastern perimeter before ascending and descending Pulpit Hill by various very steep paths, some of which are in danger of becoming lost paths, and having shaky stiles but which we, as Ramblers endeavour to keep available to pass on to future generations of adventurous walkers.
After that most strenuous episode, of steep ascents and descents, we veer a little way in the direction of Chequers, then back along a small section of Ridgeway path and up to enjoy a great view from Chequers Knapp. Along in the direction of Great Kimble, then back to the nature reserve via a paddock. We gently snake along some more paths in the nature reserve before heading back down a long series of steps to Whiteleaf golf course.
We continue around the footpath next to the golf course and take refreshment at The Plough at Cadsden before returning to Princes Risborough with just one more ascent and gentle decent along part of the Chiltern Society Brush Hill Nature Reserve.
This walk is mainly moderate but with a few very strenuous sections especially around Pulpit Hill which are especially steep and likely to be slippery. If you like steep hills, as well as lovely varied scenery, and nature reserves, this is the one you've been waiting for! Please wear appropriate clothing and walking boots, poles also recommended, especially if wet.
