The walk begins from the Post Office in Bellingham along the Redesmouth Road, then over fields to the Rede Bridge. From here we follow old railway lines and a single-track road past Buteland to Countesspark Woods and the first stretch of riverside. After a short stretch along the B6320, we rejoin the river for a pleasant return to Bellingham.
The walk is varied with panoramic views for almost the whole way. It includes open farmland, farm tracks, riverside paths, single-track roads and a short stretch on a minor road. One or two short, steep inclines but nothing strenuous.
Refreshments: Lunch stop on the walk (quite far into the walk, so there will be a short stop earlier on if needed). Refreshments afterwards if desired in the Carriages at Bellingham Heritage Centre (closes at 3.30pm) or Fountains Cafe (closes at 4pm).
The Post Office is on the corner of High Street and Redesmouth Road in Bellingham. Parking is available on the High Street or at the Heritage Centre (signposted). The fastest route to Bellingham from Ponteland is the A696, turning left at Knowesgate on the B6320 - other routes are available. Map reference: NY832839; what3words: recapture.mixing.trio
