Overview

We will be starting in Shalfleet and heading up to the downs and returning via Newtown. On the way out we go up the Caul Borne to Newbridge and then go via Churchill's Farm up to the downs. We'll go through Victoria car park above Brighstone on the downs. From there we go into Brighstone Forest and begin to make our way back through Rowridge, Swainston and Three Gates Farm. When we get to Newtown we may do a few variations to the route which will make it longer. Newtown is a very quiet place, and very beautiful, and does tend to be very popular with walkers, and there are a few variations that we could do. And then, of course, we will be going back to Shalfleet.

You will need a packed lunch as there is nowhere to buy food from. There is a drop-off point at Three Gates Farm bus stop (9.75 miles) which will take you back to Shalfleet. The buses arrive (roughly) on the hour, to arrive in Shalfleet at four minutes past.

I should mention that there is another walk commencing at the same place on the next day, Sunday. However this goes along the coastal path past Yarmouth.

Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker.

Please note that there may be short sections of road walking, so please walk in a single file and take good care.

Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation notices.

Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about

  • Any health concerns that you have
  • Any emergency contact information

We'd ask you to make sure that we have ready access to this, if needed.

Some people may wish to carry an ICE (in case of emergency) card. We have Ramblers cards for this purpose. Do discuss this subject with your walk leader if it is of interest.
