This 4th leg of the South Downs Way National trail starts at Hooksway and ends 11 miles later at Littleton Farm on the A285. We walk up a lovely valley to meet up with the SDW and proceed up a short sharp hill onto the ridge. The tracks are in good condition, walking through lovely woods and some good views, eventually following the walk to the main road where we meet the coach. (1263 ascent, 1348 descent). A lovely walk with fewer hills than June's leg.
If you prefer to visit the National Trust house and deer park, Petworth House, you will be very welcome on the coach. Petworth is a late 17th century country house, built in 1688 by Charles Seymour, Duke of Somerset. The deer park is one of the finest surviving and unspoilt examples of English landscapes, designed by Capability Brown. Ancient trees dot its landscape, one oak apparently dating back to 1066 when it was a young sapling!! National Trust entrance fees apply.
The coach leaves at 9.00am promptly from The Shire Horse Pub car park Bath Road Littlewick Green SL6 3QA. Please car share where possible and park at the far right hand side of the car park. Arrive to allow time to boot up, pre-order pub dinner and pay for your coach trip. Bring suitable outdoor walking clothes and sturdy boots, which you should be wearing as you board the coach. Please bring a packed lunch and drink for the day, as there are no opportunities to buy refreshments. For those new to long distance walking, please take note of the distance and ascent. It is estimated that the coach will arrive back at the Shire Horse at 6.45pm, in time for those wishing to dine.
