The walk is 5.5 miles and is a moderate walk. There is a possibility for the walk to be reduced to around 4.5 miles if the weather is poor.
The walk progresses through Stanhope and then takes us through open fields. We then hug the river bank for around a mile. Some inclines on a single path. It can be muddy depending on weather so boots and sticks are recommended.
We then walk up some man made steps with a railing (see picture). The walk then takes us through a couple of fields and progresses through a disused quarry, which nature has happily reclaimed. The views are well worth the effort.
The next part of the walk is on a gritted flat pathway, through the forest canopy.
We will make our way back to Stanhope on the opposite side of the river. There is a man made set of descending steps. This area can be muddy if it's been raining in the days leading up to the walk.
There are three or four stiles on the route and a couple of gates.
There are toilets in the visitor centre which also has a very nice cafe. There is a pub 5 minutes from the start/end of the walk.
