Jane Austen, widely regarded as a literary genius, was born in Steventon 250 years ago in 1775. This walk celebrates the first 25 years of Jane Austen’s life taking in Steventon and we will walk in her footsteps. The walk starts in Overton and heads West past the source of the River Test and through lanes and farmland reaching Steventon Church where her father was Rector. We pass many places little changed from Jane’s day and we begin to see how she was inspired to break the literary mould in concentrating ordinary life and addressing human psychology especially in relationships. The walk will pause at key places to consider important places and influences of Ms Austen.
This walk is free and in conjunction with the Beyond the Bonnets: Working Women in Jane Austen’s Novels at The ARC, Winchester from 26 July to 2 November 2025 and the walk needs to be booked on the ARC’s web site, arcwinchester.org.uk.
