This is an 10.5 mile circular walk along well marked paths, although slippery with mud at this time of year: the walk is Ramblers Moderate grade and there are no stiles.
From the car park on Studham Common we have a short road walk and then follow footpaths across flat farm land, through Hoo Wood and drop down to Great Gaddesden church (3.5 miles) where we will stop for a short break. From Great Gaddesden we go past the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery at St Margaret's and then along an open field path that is very muddy for about half a mile, to visit the Golden Valley and Little Gaddesden (another 4 miles). We will have a late lunch here on the common and there are seats by the war memorial and a PH, the Bridgewater Arms, where the bar entrance is at the far end of the building (north end). There is also a general store that serves coffee. After lunch we cross arable farm land and fields of sheep, then drop down to the A4146 and then climb back up to Studham Common and return to the car park (another 3 miles).
Don’t leave valuables in cars as there is a police warning notice at the Car Park entrance.
The start of the walk is on OS Map 182 at TL 026 156 Studham Common Car Park which is clearly shown on the OS map. The walk also goes onto OS Map 181.
Start at 10.30 am, estimated finish around 4.30 pm.
Bring packed lunch.
Expect paths to be slippery and muddy.
Strong walking boots and a pole are recommended.
Sorry, there are no toilets at the start or at lunch, but there are toilets for customers at the Bridgewater Arms PH at the lunch stop.
Distances are approximate.
