As per the title, a summer late afternoon / evening walk from and around Chillerton
Meet at 4.30pm outside the Gallybagger Inn at Chillerton for a lovely early evening circular walk around the area. This is definitely a bit of an up-and-down route in parts – not for those after a flat walk - but fabulous far-reaching views make it worth the effort ! There is a small amount of (fairly quiet) road-walking involved, but the walk is mostly off-road. A map of the proposed route is attached, it came out at 5.7 ish miles, however the route may be shortened if necessary on the day depending on weather and timings
The walk is estimated to end by approx 7.00pm and obviously you may choose to leave us then. But the aim, for those who wish, is that we get back to the Gallybagger pub for when they open at 7.00pm for a drink - and possibly some live music. For those who are not familiar with the Gallybagger, it is a friendly (and affordable !) community pub run wholly by volunteers. On the second and fourth Thursdays of every month they have a nice informal folk and music event which if we wish we can stay and enjoy some of. This is lowkey and varied, comprising different people taking turns to sing / play or whatever (so if any ramblers have any hidden musical talents ?!...) and spectators are warmly welcomed. A nice end to a country walk, stay as long or short as you wish.
Please note the pub don’t do food (so bring your own sustenance if wished for a short stop en route) but they do sell crisps / chocolate bars type snacks
Toilet at pub at end of walk
The walk itself is expected to finish by 7.00pm, but obviously up to you if you join us at the pub, and if so what time you stay until
TRAVEL:
Quick little disclaimer please - I'll do my best to try and assist as regards time estimates, checking timetables, and suggestions re possible travel logistics, however, as with all walks, your own travel arrangements are your responsibility, so please do check details and how they might meet your individual needs.
By car
Free onstreet parking along the road at Chillerton. NB : It may be considerate to musicians who will be carrying their instruments for the evening event to park a short distance away from the Gallybagger and walk back to the start point, rather than take the parking spaces directly outside the pub and them have to carry equipment further than necessary. Thanks !
By bus
Sorry, I do try and plan walks to be bus-accessible wherever possible but I'm afraid not easy on this occasion. Chillerton is served by the No 6 bus service but they are few and far between...
Potentially you could get the 3.45pm which gets to Chillerton Green at 4.00pm. However the only buses back to Newport are at 7.32pm or 10.22pm. Decide for yourself if the available bus options work for you, but with this limited service you may be better off on this occasion trying to arrange a carshare if possible - do post any requests (or offers) on the whatsapp group, or let me know and I can do so
Car share
In the interests of the air, parking, and non-drivers, if anyone is able to offer, or needs, a car share then please post on WhatsApp group To join group please message Serena 07564 811690.
Bring drinks. And food if required (see above but obviously feel free to bring a snack if you wish)
Depending on the weather, consider suitable, clothing, footwear, walking poles, sun cream. Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker.
Please note that there may be short sections of road walking, so please walk in a single file and take good care.
Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation notices.
Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about
- • Any health concerns that you have
- • Any emergency contact information
We'd ask you to make sure that we have ready access to this, if needed.
Some people may wish to carry an ICE (in case of emergency) card. We have Ramblers cards for this purpose. Do discuss this subject with your walk leader if it is of interest.
WhatsApp group
If you would like to join the informal WhatsApp group (even just for the purposes of communicating regarding this specific walk and then exit again), please message Serena on 07564 811690 to be added.
