This is the 14th AND FINAL(!) leg of our route along the Thames river!
You do not need to have walked any of the other stretches – you are welcome to come along just for today. Dogs on leads are welcome.
Meet at 11am. Meeting point: From Abingdon town centre head to the river on Bridge Street. Cross over the river and drop into Hales Meadow. Meet near the bridge which we will walk back under to start the walk.
We follow the Thames path leaving Abingdon behind and head through the land that time forgot… it’s Jurassic Park in Oxfordshire…
Abingdon itself is very very old and apparently famed for its bun throwing tradition which started in 1761 to mark the coronation of King George III. Think local dignitaries throwing buns from rooftops into crowds below... Special fun on high days and holidays.
The route passes a couple of picturesque locks including the beautiful Iffley Lock which dates from 1631. The river gets increasingly busy as we near Oxford with river boat trips, walkers, runners etc. Our walk ends at the Head of the River pub in Oxford town Centre around 4pm.
Please bring a packed lunch. If time permits we will stop for refreshment at The Kings Arms pub at Sandford lock, https://www.chefandbrewer.com/pubs/oxfordshire/kings-arms
