Overview

Meet at 10:15am for 10:30 am start at Chepstow Leisure Centre Car Park NP16 5NZ.

We follow the Wye Valley walking through the Giants Cave and climbing 365 steps to the Eagles Nest. We then descend to Tintern for lunch, please bring your own food. This section has both steep ascents and descents and walking poles are recommended.

At Tintern there is also the option for a drink in one of the pubs there.

We will then cross the river Wye to follow the New Wye Valley Greenway, which follows an old railway line, so this is easy walking, passing through Tidenham Tunnel. This tunnel is high and wide with a good walking surface but has very low lighting levels. Also no torches are allowed so as not to disturb the few bats that live there. We will almost certainly be passed by cyclists and we will be walking through the tunnel for 15 - 25 minutes.

After the Greenway ends near Wyedean School, we then follow minor roads and paths back to Chepstow.

As the distance to the walk is longer than usual, lift sharing may be a good idea. Suggested meeting points leaving at 9:30 are:

For Cheltenham: The car park on Commercial Street, Cheltenham, GL50 2AZ

For Gloucester: The south side of Estcourt Road parking on the slip road by the playing fields. Nearest postcode GL1 3LH.

For Stroud: The Stroud Leisure Centre car park in Stratford Park, Stratford Rd, Stroud GL5 4AF
