Starting from the village of Upwey situated midway between Weymouth and Dorchester, we make a long-ish moderate ascent to the top of the South Dorset Ridgeway, partly following the route of the old Roman road. We then follow the South Dorset Ridgeway in a Westerly direction to the popular view point of Hardy’s Monument, with extensive views over the surrounding country side, passing several bronze age barrows along the way. Weather permitting, we stop for lunch at Hardy's Monument, where there are views over the villages of Portesham and Abbotsbury, the Fleet, and Lyme Bay. We return via the Jubilee trail, first passing through a valley which has a Yorkshire Dales feel due to the dry stone walls and ruined farm house, then up onto another ridge, passing farms and tiny hamlets, before a moderately steep decent back down to Upwey.
