This is a largely flat walk on good paths and follows the River Lea through the wildlife-rich Walthamstow Wetlands and Hackney Marshes. We stop to admire some industrial relics and see how nature takes over when left to do so. We pass through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and see how this fabulous park has changed over the passing of time since the 2012 London Olympic Games. Our route next includes a short section along the River Lea Navigation. We visit a fascinating tidal watermill, the largest in the country, in Three Mills island and see the Abbey Mills Pumping Station - one of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's Victorian marvels of engineering before arriving at our destination at Abbey Road DLR Station.
Meet in the large entrance hall at Tottenham Hale tube station on the Victoria Line. There are toilets available on mainline platform 4. There are several other proper toilet opportunities along the walk. Near the end we visit House Mill and there is an opportunity to have a guided tour of the mill along with a booklet and refreshments. This would be specially laid on for us and would cost £10 per person. I need to know how much interest there is for this so if you are coming on this walk, please let me know by email, phone or if I see you the previous week.
Please bring a picnic lunch.
Dogs are not allowed on some parts of this walk due to nesting birds.
