Overview

We will meet at the carpark at the north end of the Mynydd Du Forest about 10 miles north of Abergavenny. A short walk takes us out of the forest to open moorland for the rest of the walk. A steepish climb takes us to Pen y Gadair Fawr and on to Waun Fach, the highest point in the Black Mountains. From here we descend a ridge and continue via Bwlch Bach a’r Grib and on to Blaen Grwyne Fawr. Alternatively, some may prefer to take a shortcut from Waun Fach directly to Blaen Grwyne Fawr avoiding around 3 miles and 1,000 ft of climb. The remainder of the route is a reasonably gentle descent to Grwyne Fawr Reservoior and back into the forest.
