From the car park we follow the Hardy Way downhill to Brianspuddle and then along a quiet lane to Throop. Crossing the River Piddle, we pass Turners Puddle church with a display of snowdrops and then follow the Jubilee Trail and field paths to Tolpuddle. We recross the River Piddle and follow a green lane uphill to Southover Heath with more snowdrops on display. Lunch is at Pallington Clump with good views if the weather is kind. We return along forest roads and paths across Affpuddle and Bryants Puddle Heaths.
Walking on tracks, bridleways, paths and short road sections – but boots/gaiters/over trousers essential at this time of year. A few stiles in the first half of the walk.
A varied landscape of small hamlets, farmland, water meadows, crystal clear rivers, woodland and heaths. Lots of sinkholes – some flooded – and ancient tumuli. Explanation boards in Tolpuddle set out the story of the Martyrs. Gently undulating terrain with one slightly steeper descent.
Packed lunch.
Assistance Dogs only.
