Join us on this 'Big Wild Walk' conducted in collaboration with Ordnance Survey as part of their National Get Outside Day (NGOD) encouraging everyone to give it a go. Get some gentle exercise, meet new people and open your eyes to the beauty of the local area that, until now, has lain behind a hedge or wall as you wizzed past in your car. This is a short walk around West Malling, taking in a lake with wildlife, a church, picturesque cottages, farmland, and a romantic ruined tower. Raising your gaze to the north on much of the walk will give good views of the North Downs, but while in the town keep yours peeled for the blue plaques mounted on some of the buildings by the local historical society, which relate stories of famous forebears. - ranging from, Gundulf, a Bishop of Rochester in Norman times, who built the aforementioned tower, to The Beatles, the 60's pop group.
Let's just hope that the weather gods shine on us!
Be aware that the monthly street market in West Malling centre will hinder access from the north.
While there are some slopes, most of the walk is fairly level. The fields will be muddy after rain, so suitable footwear is advised. Very few stiles.
