This seafront walk is a collaboration with Capital Walkers. It explores a section of the Saxon Shore Way as a pre-cursor to Capital's nightwalk on Saturday 20th July-Sunday 21st July, which will follow the same route.
Starting in Whitstable at 10am the walk will hug the shoreline for 17 miles. Passing through Herne Bay (where there is an interesting memorial to aviator Amy Johnson), we'll continue to Reculver Towers for our picnic (there are some facilities just before Reculver but please do bring a packed lunch). Reculver Towers are nine miles into the walk - following lunch we'll walk the final eight miles to Margate
The route is mainly flat but there is one climb as the path winds from the shoreline to the cliff tops and at points we need to walk up and down steps between lower and upper levels of the path.
There are lots of public loos on the first part of the walk - at Whitstable Station, in Whitstable, enroute to Herne Bay, in Herne Bay and just before Reculver Towers. They are less frequent on the stretch between Reculver and Margate.
Once we get to Margate for those who wish to we can get fish and chips and eat on the beach before heading for the train.
Drop out points are: Herne Bay, Birchington-on-Sea and Westgate-on-Sea.
No booking required.
The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors such as, weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.
Travel:
Take the 8.40am train from London Victoria (8:57 Bromley South), which arrives in Whitstable at 9.59.
There are no highs speed trains running from London to Whitstable but they are running from Margate to London, so you may wish to get a split ticket and travel back on the faster train. If you don't want to do this - buy a return to Margate on the normal train (but this won't allow you to travel back on the high speed train).
