A festive 5 mile walk through Winchester’s historic streets, riverside paths, and hilltop views, ending at the Cathedral to enjoy the Christmas Market.
After last year’s cancellation due to the weather, we’ll try once more to make it to the Winchester Christmas Market. Our walk begins at Winchester Station, from where we head towards St Bartholomew’s churchyard and the peaceful Hyde Abbey Garden, which recalls the great abbey church and marks the resting place of Alfred the Great. From there, we meander through the charming streets of Winchester, pausing to enjoy its historic landmarks, before crossing the grounds of the magnificent Cathedral and our final destination for the market later in the day.
The route then takes us alongside the gentle flow of the River Itchen, before climbing to the St Giles Hill viewpoint, where a panoramic vista of the city awaits. After taking in the view, we descend back through the Abbey Gardens, returning to the Cathedral just in time to soak up the festive atmosphere of the Christmas Market.
